I just had the most incredible experience at the Essence Film Festival in New Orleans, and I couldn't wait to share it with you. It's been 20 long years since I last set foot in this vibrant city, back when I attended a Student Government conference during my college days. But this time, it was different. This time, I was here to attend the 2nd Annual Essence Film Festival ( part of the Essence Festival of Culture) for a table reading of my short screenplay, 'Chosen.' And let me tell you, from the moment I left my home to the moment I arrived in New Orleans, I felt an overwhelming sense of favor and excitement.

A Serendipitous Encounter
On my second flight to New Orleans, I found myself seated next to a kind-hearted woman who must have sensed my nervousness about flying. We struck up a conversation, and she reassured me that everything would be fine, reminding me that God had us in His hands. As we chatted, we discovered that we were both heading to New Orleans for our respective purposes. She was part of the media while I was there for the table reading of my script. We talked about our families, our passions, and everything in between. By the time we landed, I stepped off the plane feeling optimistic and ready for the adventure that awaited me.
Embracing a Community
Upon arriving at the Essence Film Festival's orientation, I was immediately welcomed into a community of incredible Black writers, actors, and filmmakers. Surrounded by like-minded individuals who understood the power of storytelling and the importance of representation, it felt like I was among family.
Inspiring Connections and Learning Opportunities
Over the next three days, I connected with other amazing writers and attended insightful panels and inspiring masterclasses. The experience further solidified my belief that black stories are not only wanted but truly needed in

today's world. One of the highlights was attending a Screenplay Masterclass on Writing for Film and Television, led by the fantastic Craig T. Williams. His insights into creating realistic, emotionally resonant characters left a lasting impression, and I now have more clarity on how to develop my characters.
Meeting my Mentor
Meeting my mentor was an absolute dream come true! Can you believe it? I had the incredible opportunity to meet the one and only 'That Chick Angel' herself, along with her amazing partner, Tank. And as if that wasn't enough, I also had the privilege of being introduced to the incredibly talented Bresha Webb. Let me tell you, seeing Angel and Bresha in person only confirmed what I already knew - their beauty truly radiates both on and off the screen.

Bringing the Script to Life
After weeks of preparation and collaboration with a talented cast and the assistance of the New Orleans-based Casting Director, Nicole Collins, the moment finally arrived to witness the table reading of my script. The palpable synergy among everyone involved made it a truly awe-inspiring and successful event.

Belonging and Purpose

The journey to the Essence Film Festival had me feeling a mix of nerves and excitement at first. However, it turned out to be the validation I had been seeking all along - a testament to my rightful place in that room, where my love for writing aligned with my burning ambition. The festival transcended being a mere event; it became a sanctuary for my spirit. A space where the beauty of Black narratives flourished, where bonds were forged, and where inspiration became an unceasing current in every dialogue. The electric atmosphere, the vibrant individuals, and the captivating tales served to reaffirm my unwavering purpose as a writer.
