The Strength in Hush

Writer: Michelle FarleyMichelle Farley

As a child, my mother often asked what I was thinking. Being quiet was my default, lost in my world of thoughts. My response was simple: “Everything.” I contemplated the events of the day, envisioned the future, and wondered about the lives of other children across the globe, wondering if their thoughts mirrored my own. In those quiet reflections, I realized the profound art of being silent.

Silence has always been my sanctuary. In those quiet moments, I found solace, clarity, and purpose. I discovered the immense power of restraint and introspection in a world that often urges us to be louder to share our thoughts and opinions every minute.

Silence isn’t about withholding or keeping others at bay. It’s a conscious choice, a wellspring of wisdom that allows me to navigate life’s intricate tapestry. There are moments to share and to articulate my thoughts and feelings openly. Yet, there are equally important moments when I let silence, fasting, and praying do the talking for me.

Let me be clear: silence isn’t synonymous with emptiness or lack of expression. It’s a canvas on which the most profound insights and understandings can be painted. In the quiet recesses of my mind, I find the space to process, to reflect, and to understand myself and what’s happening around me. It’s a subtle pause, a deep breath, a moment of warm stillness in the hustle and bustle of life.

In that silence, there's peace—a respite from the clamor and chaos, a refuge for my spirit. It's a sanctuary where I can retreat, recharge, and find serenity.

I celebrate my knowingness, my quietness. It’s a part of who I am—a trait that defines me and enriches my journey. For in the depths of my silence, I am able to rediscover my true self, my purpose, and the profound connection that unites me to this world.
